Whilce Portacio: Pinoy Marvel

with 7 comments

Since my elementary days, I have been a fan of Marvel superheroes, starting of course with the X-Men. Everyone was watching the Friday night TV show where we were introduced to Cyclops, Wolverine, Storm (the girls’ favorite), Jean Grey / Phoenix, Jubilee, Professor X, Beast, Gambit, Rogue and a motley crue of other characters in the X-Men universe. Most notable of these is the versatile time-traveling mutant Bishop (Lucas Bishop), who was drawn by Filipino-American Marvel Comics artist Whilce Portacio. He is worth mentioning here because he also drew and designed the sleeve for Rivermaya’s album “Trip”. Talk about Pinoy power.

  2. My good friend Eric Matti did a movie called Gagamboy, but I’m not sure if that is a traditional Pinoy superhero. I know he did some other high tech stuff, but I am fond of low budget indy film projects.

My favorite Marvel superhero when I was a child was Capt. America. I’m a fan of Marvel when Jack Kirby did a lot of the art. I used to copy a lot of his art when I was a little kid.

  3. Gagamboy’s basically the Pinoy version of Spider-man (a rip-off), but I heard it was a good one. I saw a part of it on one of the local Filipino cable channels here and it was nice.

  4. By the way, you know Erik Matti personally? He’s a big name here in the movie industry. But I think he’s not that active anymore these days.

My heroes back then were those 80’s cartoons I used to watch, Thundercats and the Silverhawks. I only got to know Marvel when I was in grade school.

  5. hey man! i stumbled upon this post while searching for something else in google. yeah, whilce sure kicked ass back in the 90’s, but right now, he ain’t the hot stuff anymore. there’s a new breed of filipino comic book artist invading the marvel and dc universes right this very moment.

try googling names like leinil yu, carlo pagulayan, philip tan and also my buddy, mico suayan for starters and see what i’m talking about.

also try http://www.komikero.com for a glimpse of pinoy komiks’ golden years.

    have a nice one. :)

  6. Thanks for the tip. Yea, just recently I’ve been talking to some people about Whilce, he was an icon back in the 90’s, but I guess not as hot right now. Those names that you mentioned are the ones to watch.
